The first model to carry the Challenger name was the Dodge Silver Challenger, a limited-edition model of the Dodge Coronet that debuted in 1959. It featured an all-silver exterior, with options for a straight-six or V8 engine and a three-speed manual or automatic transmission. It wasn't until 1970, however, that the first "true" Challenger arrived. Like the Challenger models available today, the 1970 Dodge Challenger was famous for its staggering number of trim levels and features-as well as its potent engine, of course. The second-generation Challenger debuted in 1978, and was notable for being one of the first American cars to use balance shafts to help soften engine vibrations.
And that brings us to today-the third generation Dodge Challenger debuted in 2008. The 2015 Dodge Challenger is a throwback to the classic muscle car design, and is available in seven trim levels: SXT, SXT Plus, R/T, R/T Plus, R/T Scat Pack, SRT 392, and SRT Hellcat. There are four different engines available, including a monster 6.2-liter supercharged Hellcat V8 engine that creates 707 hp and 650 lb.-ft. of torque-the most horsepower ever on a commercially available model. With this engine, you can go from zero to 60 in just 4.1 seconds, and the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat even recorded a quarter mile track time of just 11.9 seconds. The throwback exterior belies a thoroughly modern cabin, with available features that include Bluetooth and an 8.4" touchscreen interface.
